The State of Spam report by Symantec stated that spam contributes to 70% of the email traffic. The month of August witnessed the dramatic rise and fall in the PDF scam. While in the early part of the month it contributed 20% of all the spam which is the peak level and ended with 1%. Spammers persist to attacks containing malicious URLs, from Ecard to You Tube accounting up to 15%. The image spam level continued to hover around 10%. Spam messages containing URLs that use Top Level Domain for China i.e. cn saw a significant rise up to seven times than the normal existence. These URLs were used to promote pharmaceutical products and casinos. The 419 spam named after the Nigerian Criminal Code dealing with fraud carry on evolving and continue to be innovating. An interesting sideline is that the conmen have started using word file attachments along with images. An unsolicited mail with some incorrect English and shouting text similar to 419 scam claims that the sender wants to give away his pedigree puppy was also blocked by Symantec’s filters.
